Day 10 - My New Year Resolutions | 12 Days of Christmas

Yep....I'm one of those suckers that make these. In my defense, I'm usually quite good at sticking to them (read...they all stand a 50/50 chance). I usually make an entire list of resolutions, but I've actually already successfully completed one before 2016 has even finished - I've given up milk (read up on it, you might want to too).

    Anyways, here goes nothing...

Day 9 - Christmas Traditions | 12 Days of Christmas

Everyone says this, every year - but Christmas goes by so quickly. Which is why every year my family and I always make sure we have the best time. We always tend to follow our usual traditions while still adding in new things each year. I am always interested in seeing other people's traditions so I thought I would share mine.

Day 8 - The Nutcracker | 12 Days of Christmas

I live with four bad-ass ladies, in my houseshare in South East London, and we collectively decided that our Christmas activity would be a group trip to see The Nutcracker by the English National Ballet.

    Day 7 - Dirty Dancing ★★★ | 12 Days of Christmas

Spontaneous trips the the theatre are my favourite and last night I went to see Dirty Dancing at the Phoenix theatre! Something which I though was funny was; a year ago on the Tuesday before Christmas Jake and I went to see Elf the musical and now this Tuesday before Christmas we find ourselves having the 'time of our lives'.

Day 6 - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them | 12 Days of Christmas

A film review?! Have we ever done a film review before? I don't think we have....ooooo this is exciting then! And what a way to kick off - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

For me there will always be something very festive about the Harry Potter always came out around my birthday (a winter baby), and lets not lie; we all remember and long for Hogwarts in the snow, and warming butter beer at Hogsmeade. So settling into a cinema seat, peanut M&M's ungraceful sat on my growing beer belly, I became so gleefully excited within the first few seconds of this film....dumdumduhduhduhdumdumdum.....

Day 5 - Visit Copenhagen (again) | 12 Days of Christmas

So, the beginning of the year, Jake and I headed to Copenhagen and I completely fell in love. You can read about that trip here & here! Fast forward 12 months and Emma and I headed back for some Christmas Shopping and a city break away together! I managed to find some bargain flights for the beginning of December, we wrapped up warm and were on our way.  On arriving we checked into the Hilton hotel by the airport. I would highly recommend staying at the Hilton since it is close to the airport, 10 minutes from the centre on the metro and the staff are all super helpful!

    Day 4 - Petitou | 12 Days of Christmas

I've fallen a little bit in love. How on earth it's taken me so long to get my butt down it Petitou I'll never know but it is shameful! Thankfully I recently corrected this issue.

Day 3 - Samantha Cusick London | 12 Days of Christmas

I am funny when it comes to getting my hair cut, and panic about going to the hairdressers - so when I find a good place to go, I feel I need to share! I'd seen Samantha Cusick hairdressers on Instagram and heard through a few friends it's worth a visit. And, when I went I was certainly NOT disappointed. I have been going now since August and I would highly recommend you to pay a visit.

    Thursday, 15 December 2016

Day 2 - Licensed to Ill | 12 Days of Christmas

Okay, so I know a show about the the Beastie Boys doesn't sound like the most festive thing in the world, but I took my brother for his Christmas present so it counts! I've actually been to see this show twice now, so if that's not a glowing review, I don't know what is.

Day 1 - Visit York | 12 Days of Christmas

If you're thinking of planning a day trip or a weekend away here's a lovely idea to add to your 'places to go', especially around Christmas time. Jake and I want to start seeing more of the UK and make the most out of cities that are on our doorstep, although I adore seeing the world and travelling on different city breaks, it is more affordable and faster (most of the time). We headed to York one weekend, just for a day trip. After packing up our little car with road trip snacks and chose the perfect playlist, we were ready to go!

    Stylist Live 2016

A few weekends back, I headed to Stylist Live with my sister, Kelly. As I am on the Stylist Beauty Council - I was treated to a pair of VIP tickets to the event as a thank you for my contributions. Stylist, for those you who don't know, is a free weekly magazine that is distributed across several cities in the UK. It is such a great magazine that I love reading each week. With the best high street buys, travel tips on a different location each week, the latest beauty & fashion trends and with much more great content, I'm so impressed they keep it free! Each year they hold Stylist Live which is a 4 day show to showcase their favourite brands; lesser known brands; catwalks to show the latest trends which you can shop straight from the high street and, they hold inspirational talks and workshops! And my gosh did we have fun?

    August Favourites

BREAKING NEWS: Summer is now over. And we are now into N's favourite season ever. As August drew to and end it gave us time to reflect over 2016 summer and although here in the UK we did get some very sunny summer days - it just wasn't enough. So on reflection we are both so glad that we managed to find time jet away. August saw our blog have a lovely redesign with a shiny new logo too so we really hope you like it. It has been a busy month, N has started her new job which has meant a revaluation in her time management to ensure to balance everything and M has been finishing up at her current place of work, as she's about to embark on a new career too! Aren't we busy ladies?! Now, onto our August monthly favourites...

    Blush and Blow London

Blush and Blow, on New Kings Road, is one of the newest hair salons offering blow drys and treatments, alongside cute, Instagrammable interiors. Opened by Bridget O'Keeffe, once a beauty blogger herself, it's evident that this salon knows customer experience is as important as treatment quality. We were lucky enough to be invited along to review this lovely, little spot.

    Theo's Pizzeria | Camberwell

I love pizza. All the time. Every day. I love it. But, because you can SO tell the difference between a great and a rubbish pizza, I tend to stick to the restaurants I know...(ie, Elephantastic). So I visited Theo's Pizzeria in Camberwell with slight trepidation... nerves were ridiculous. This pizza place is, quite literally, heaven.

HulaFit Aboard The Good Ship Benefit

Recently, on a rainy Saturday morning, we were lucky enough to be invited to review a HulaFit class, happening on the deck of The Good Ship Benefit; we'd been wanting to have a go for ages, nothing was going to stop us! As soon as we stepped inside the glowing pink boat, and met our instructor Shakira, we knew were in for a good time!

A Day in the Life of a Hipster

I am constantly, unfairly, being labelled a hipster; I argue against it adamantly! Yes I adore coffee more than life, and yes my jean of choice is 'skinny', but no I am NOT a hipster who listens to bands you've 'probably never heard of.'
...but whoops. I just did THE most East London Hipster day of all time. Every once in a while, there's something really brilliant about immersing yourself in Shoreditch like a true tourist. Here is my day in the life of a hipster:

    Sosharu Restaurant Review

Sosharu is a new restaurant by the fantastic Jason Atherton that opened in March 2016 in Clerkenwell, London.  It's Executive Chef Alex Craciun really impresses with a mouth watering menu and each and every member of staff is clearly passionate about the service and food they serve.

    July Favourites

OH MY's been mental over here at Split the City, so please excuse our lack of monthly faves. We're hoping our beautiful new redesign makes up for it? Let us know you're thoughts!

We've both been jetting off on holidays, trying to dodge the rain here in London, among loads of other fun happenings too! It must be a sign we're getting older, as the months keep going too quick for our liking, but if it speeds up getting some sun, then we're into it.

Nikki has been busy making her stamp on Youtube, and now has her own domain there, so make sure you're up to date with!

Meanwhile, Martha has been busy soaking up the culture here in London, and on holiday in Greece. Let her Instagram give you serious envy: we get to sleep now?!

    An Alternative Sunday Lunch

As a life long veggie, Sunday Lunch has never really been a thing for me... sure I could just make a plate out of the side dishes, but there was no main attraction worth making. I love the idea of going all in on a Sunday - it's a day of pure relaxation - but what's a girl to do when she's not too keen on Yorkshire Puddings?!

Well my lovely boyfriend cooked up quite the alternative! Now I'm going to be tucking into every single week!

    Barrafina | Restaurant Review

This is a restaurant you NEED to know about.  With 3 locations in London: Adelaide Street, Drury Lane and Firth Street Barrafina is the acclaimed by many to be the best Tapas restaurant in London. And I can see for myself why!

    Clerkenwell Design Week

What a busy week for London! First off, there's our previous post, and now this; Clerkenwell Design Week! What I've always adored about CDW is it's accessibility, it's unpretentious, and doesn't just cater for professionals, but also for those that just have an appreciation for beautiful things.

    Travel to... | Barcelona

Barcelona has been the one place I've wanted to go to for so long, so I was super excited when my parents told my sister and I we were jetting off with them for a long weekend in April.  As my birthday and my mums birthday is in April it seemed like the right time to go and the weather would be just right to do lots of walking through the city.

    Restaurant Review | Galvanisers Union

It's been a long long time since I've ventured out to Bromley-by-Bow; I've not had much cause too. But when N and I were offered the chance to review Galvanisers, I hauled myself over there for some culinary delights!

    Travel to... | Berlin

I've been on my travels again. This time it was time to head to Berlin. People always tell me I must visit and how much they love this city. So I was excited to see what the hype was all about. On arrival I immediately had good vibes. The air was fresh and there was a good city buzz.  We had to wrap up warm as it was SUPER cold; but the cold weather wasn't going to stop up exploring this beautiful city.

    London Fields Cycles Relaunch

One of the many reasons I have such a great love for East London, is that it's the one of the only places in London where you can still feel little pockets that have that 'community vibe' still intact. This is incredibly evident at bike store, London Fields Cycles. Their relaunch party wasn't populated by press etc... instead it was local people who were genuinely excited by the stores reopening, and a lot of Hackney BMX kids.

Blogger Tea Party | Bloggers Hangout

Martha and I got to attend another one of the awesome Blogger Hangout events. This time is was the 'Bloggers Tea Party' hosted at the Pop up patio cafe in Moorgate - which you should really check out because it's going to be such a good place to head to this summer as it is in the middle of a park and they serve great coffee!

    M's Spring Playlist

I've finally stopped wearing my winter coat! Jacket and t-shirt weather, that's my sweet spot. And whilst I'm strutting around London, and admiring how glorious it is in the sun, I need to have the best Spring playlist around.

    Theatre Review | Idiots ★★★★

We are brutally reminded throughout this performance that what we are watching is 'not an adaptation'; we are reminded by the industrial light blinking those words at the back, and we are reminded by the actors. ...thing is that makes it damn hard to explain in a review.

    March Favourites

April is here! How has that happened so quick? I feel like we say this at the start of every monthly favourites – but seriously it only feels like yesterday it was Christmas. April is such a great month as it is N’s birthday and who doesn’t love celebrating a birthday? So expect in April to see a cheeky birthday wish list. March has been another busy month, M has moved into her new place with some lovely housemates and N has launched her YouTube Channel.

This time last week, Martha and I headed to the Bloggers London Fashion Week hosted by Bloggers Hangout. It was such a delightful evening and a huge thank you to all the lovely brands we met there in the gifting lounge. Martha's Spring Style Wishlist

I adore Spring, it's possibly my favourite season...perfection is 't-shirt and light jacket' weather. Also, as the seasons change, it's a perfect time to revamp your style! I've found over winter my style has become a lot more gothic, and though there are elements of that that will travel through seasons, Spring seems like the time to look in a new direction.

    Here's my Spring Style Wishlist:

    Confessions of a Snackaholic

As you can read all about here, I've packed in eating chocolate (currently, just for Lent, but I just might carry it on). However, this trying time has made me realise a very important truth about myself; I, Martha Watson Allpress, am a snackaholic. I can't help it, it's who I am!

I always eat three, good sized portioned meals during the day, but it's simply not enough, especially now I'm working out more. Snacking's actually good for you! It keeps your metabolism constantly running and your bodies digestive system working over-time, all good things! However, the issue being, I used to snack on Twirls and what do I use now?

Here are my Top 5 Healthy Snacks:

Play Review | The Young Visiters ★★★★

A book written by a 9 year old adapted to a play isn't always the first production Martha and I would chose to watch the Theatre; however it was a pure delight. Daisy Ashford wrote this book at the mere age of nine(impressive) and it was published in 1919; 28 years after it was written. Now, the daring company Rough Haired Pointer have put this on at the Tabard Theatre this March - adapted and directed by Mary Franklin.

It only feels like yesterday we were celebrating the New Year and now we are in March? How does time fly so fast. Being really busy is probably the main factor in this and wow, February was a very fun month. Martha in Copenhagen | Days 1 & 2

So Nikki was back for a week, and then I went and did a romantic, little excursion to Copenhagen too! It's super cool that we get to bring you a 'split' review of a city other than our beloved London.
Brace yourselves....these won't be short and sweet posts; we (boyfriend and me) did so much! I'll try and keep in photo-heavy and text-light but that never works out ahaha!
    Here goes....days one and two:

    Giving up Chocolate

I've never really participated in Lent before, because I've never really been one for excess...however when this year rolled around, I stopped and thought; 'Is there anything my life might be better without?' ...for me, the word, 'chocoholic' doesn't even cover it.

I can easily get through more than a few chocolate bars per day...they are my snack of choice. A Snickers here, a Twirl there, who cares?! I thought...that's not a healthy way to think. Before you know it you're knee deep in Lindt, and wondering what went wrong with your life.
I gave it up more out of intrigue than anything else, to purely test my self-will. Turns out it is hard. That sugar rush is as addictive anything else, and I've struggle, a lot. But I've learnt there are alternatives out there.
For those of you with the same affliction, here's what helped me through:

    Travel to... | Copenhagen Day 2 & 3

So now you have read up on Day One of my trip to Copenhagen, it's time to fill you in on day 2 & 3 of our trip. As you may have gathered from the Day One post - I absolutely love Copenhagen and I think that is the general consensus of people going there or who live there.

    BAFTA's 2016 | Winners

February is such a great time of the year as we see the nights getting lighter and the occasional sunny day getting us excited for summer. However another reason I love this time of the year is it is AWARDS SEASON. From the Brit Awards on 24th February, Oscar Awards on 28th February and BAFTA's 14th February - thats right last night. I love making an evening out of watching awards and as it was Valentines Day my best friend Emma came over and we got our snacks ready and wrote out our predictions for the evening.

Here is a list of the winners:

Valentines & Avoiding the Cringe Factor

I adore my boyfriend. I think the sun shines out of his rear-end, and I would take a bullet to the butt for him. However, I can't do soppy. I try so hard, but I just can't do it. Big pink love hearts, and teddy bears holding balloons tend to make me recoil in horror...I don't do cringe.
So this is a little guide, for those of you with a cold, dead heart like me, who'd rather do Valentines minus all the mush. could go for dinner. Dinner is nice and food is good, but chances are you're going to end up opposite a load of other couples, all in competition for who can be the most sickly. could go around the London Eye, and stare out into the view together, but chances are you're going to cramped in with tourists elbowing you out of the way, because you're ruining their selfie. could go for a romantic stroll through Hyde Park, but it's freaking freezing and you're going to stand in dog poop.
    Here are my suggestions:

    January Favourites

What an incredibly busy month it's been! We've settled into the New Year with very busy schedules, and lots of things to write about. Everyone has a resurgence of energy in January; it's that fresh-start feeling; and it's giving us great vibes for 2016.

    Here are our January favourites:

Review | Trainspotting, Kings Head Theatre ★★★★★

How I'll get through this review without swearing is completely beyond me, but I'm going to give it a go.

Trainspotting, by Irvine Welsh, is my favourite book. It borders on obsession; I think I first read it when I was around 14/15, and I just fell in love with the vulgarity and aggression. Thankfully, in my life, I've never known someone to have a destructive substance addiction, but what resonated with me was the anger and friendships of the small town atmosphere. Then I saw the film and my mind erupted even more so; well acted, gut-wrenching and hilarious. It deserved all of the accolades going.
I went to see Irvine Welsh talk at a public reading when he released 'Skagboys', and he was so eloquent, and clever, about his topics and writing, that I then proceeded to read the entire Irvine Welsh back catalogue.
Trainspotting will always be my favourite, and hold a special place in my heart and so I'm very, very protective of it.
Kings Head, and In Your Face Theatre, had a lot to live up to.

Travel to... | Copenhagen - Day One

This weekend I headed on a short city break to Copenhagen. I love going on city breaks and exploring new places. When you're working hard all year it's nice to break it up with a city break here and there.  This year I vowed to travel even more. Last year I did plenty of travelling but there is always more to be done.

The English National Ballet | Le Corsaire

I'm embarrassed that it's taken me 22 years to see a ballet...Nikki too (well, 21 and a bit). But since we both grew up going to dance classes, it seems almost ridiculous!
But that's now thankfully changed, as we were kindly invited to watch the latest English National Ballet production, Le Corsaire.
