Blogmas | Be A Friend Campaign

Coca Cola can step aside, because the real advert that signals Christmas now (at least for me) is John Lewis. It's not Christmas until some ethereal girl is singing a slowed down cover, of an old indie song, over some heart-wrenching acting. This year it's all about The Man on the Moon.
This years advert is carrying such a strong message too; loneliness in old people is far too common, and what a devastating way to spend your Christmas! A tiny act of kindness can go a long way, and the campaign 'Be A Friend' is championing that.

The campaign is ran by the charity Friends of the Eldery, who look after a lot of branches of support (care homes, dementia support, befriending).... The unique thing about Be A Friend is that it's not asking for volunteers, or regimented activities, it's simply asking that the community are good to their elders.
The small act of smiling at someone you pass in the street, or stopping for a quick chat in a supermarket, could really make someones day - it could make their week. For all you know, you're the first person they may have spoken to in a while.
They have some great PDFs on little acts that you can do to help, which can all be found here
You can pledge a promise on their Friends Wall; little things like helping someone across the street, or just keeping an eye out for a neighbour. You're able to read other people's promises if you're after a little inspiration.
It's been a long tradition of mine to do a good deed over Christmas and on my birthday - I think a lot of people are the same. I think on a day where you're so fortunate (surrounded by loved ones, and gloriously happy) it feels fair to give something back to the universe.
They say there's no such thing as a selfless good deed - but so what if it makes you feel good. So long as it's helping another too.

    Be a friend this Christmas... M x
